i'm currently bouncing bunny on yoga ball #3, trying to see if he'll go back to sleep before 2:00. he's introduced us to a new schedule that i am not at all fond of.

7:00 bedtime! hooray!

typically i'll go in once or twice to comfort or nurse him if he stirs

10:00 awake! boo!

he wakes up squirming and sometimes crying or grunting. then he poops. usually, papa and i are watching a show and i think that our eagerness to put him back to sleep might be what's causing the Super Awake state that he goes into.

we will rock and bounce and nurse him until he gives up at 2:00

9:00-12:00 awake! if he gets up within this window, he will need a 45 minute nap in an hour and a half. if he nurses and sleeps until 2:00, i try to get going right away so i can wear him out in time for bedtime.

papa is out this evening, seeing a friend's band play. bunny has successfully fallen back asleep. we'll see how long this lasts. wish us luck!

ps- 7:00 is when alden has chosen to go to bed. we haven't tried to impart a schedule on him, as he's too little. the only thing i'm actively trying to change is his night nursing habit. he tends to be too active and alert during the day to sit still long enough to get a good meal. this means he still nurses like a newborn at night, trying to catch up. not good for mama's rem cycle. also, the resulting pooping seems to be what's waking him up. ah, poop!

ok, more excitement and new friend stories later. to bed!

  1. oh, leon's been playing the poop game with us, too. usually around 3 am. he also has his diaper changed at 10.30 and 3 whether or not pooping happens because he nurses so much that even a super absorbent cloth diaper with doubler and wool cover can't keep him happy. even if there isn't a leak, he's awful uncomfortable.

of course, now i'm worried that he's gotten into the habit and will continually expect multiple changes at night.

i agree that staying quiet is best during prolonged wakings. i try to avoid eye contact if at all possible. apparently that speeds up their heart rate. but really, there's not much we can do if the diaper needs to be changed. it's awfully disruptive, especially if it happens within 2-3 hours of regular waking time.

leon's been a hearty night nurser for the past 4 months. i'll let you know if that ever changes ;)

have a good night and stay healthy!

  2. I just read this book: The No-Cry Sleep Solution, http://www.pantley.com/elizabeth/books/0071381392.php, maybe it would help? Just throwing that out there! Good Luck!

  3. thanks, erika! oh man. i can't imagine how many diapers i'd have to change if alden were still in cloth. we tried them the first two weeks (admittedly, not the best time to try it out) and every time he peed, even just a tiny bit, he'd scream and scream. now he's outgrown the small size so we can't try again for a while. ah well.

bree, i haven't read any of those books! i think i know basically what they say, though. routines, right? we're working on it, but it's tougher than it sounds. plus, i'm not sure i believe in them. i mean, babies this small change so often. week to week, really, that it's pretty much impossible to expect to maintain any sort of consistency. of course, they're all different. i hope you get a nice, sleepy baby!
